BREAKING NEWS- From the Colonies and wider Dominions of the British Commonwealth, Raleigh Twenty Race Results:

Awaiting the final results from the officials with the Oamaru Ordinary Bicycle Club.
We would like to thank this club for such a marvelous effort in staging these races around the Harbour streets of Oamaru.

OFFICIAL RESULTS FROM NOVEMBER 21st 2009, ACCORDING TO SAFARI BROS

MENS Raleigh 20 race of 2 laps:

Mike Harris 1st, Healing Loline 20"
Gordy Paul 2nd,
Mike Shea 3rd

WOMENS Raleigh 20 race of 1 lap:

Mandy Mayhem 1st
Maxine Woodhouse 2nd
Fiona Hancock 3rd


The races were studded with fabulous stars such as Artist extraordinaire Donna Demente and her poodle in various guises took to the streets on quaint 28" ladies frames and the Raleigh 20 classes also. Pure style .
'Naughty Schoolgirls' too for the decerning eyes. A sensation was the Internet Romeo who was rumoured to arrive and was there trying to shake off his Armed Offender minders. A picture of him appears in Monday 23rd November edition, of the Otago Daily Times Tabloid,at ' full tilt' fleeing from Police...[see 'Regions pp.15-17'], on a green metallic Healing single speed with drop bars and Brooks saddle. The elusive but not dishevelled, student Internet Romeo was dressed in colour coordinated lichen green 70s imitation tweed suit with buttoned band on the back. The experience was drenched in nostalgia for the riding romeo as his love affair with the German bird Maja had passage through these very streets on their planned trip to Kaikoura in February 2009.
Other interesting entrants were the baker who had an impromptu go on a delivery bicycle. A very interesting English chap with extremely interesting English bicycles from the 1930s, one with wooden rims. His american female friend rode a maroon 'Street Superb.

All eyes were agog as a verbous gesticulating woman with a large bustier and bare belly in a red polka dot dress won the women's Raleigh 20 race against appx 20 other competitors. $200 prize money donated by Safari Bros..
An imaculate blue Healing lowline tandem featuring a mother and son duo, streaked in last but not disgraced, as only mum was pedalling.
A dapper Mike Harris of Oamaru took away the prestigous Safari Bros $500 first prize in the men's Raleigh 20 race over two laps of the harbour street circuit on an unmodified Healing Loline 20" left in 2nd gear.' Mike cleaned up all the veteran bicycle races on a late 1930s- 1940s BSA men's frame with sq section adjustable racing bars. He rode to the top of the gut buster street effortlessly along with two others including the English gentleman, all on English veteran Bikes.

Penny Farthing Race results tba ie: we are awaiting the results.

Competitors went to a variety of venues after the races, including the new fabulous Oamaru Ordinary Bicycle Club Clubroom by the Railway line in Harbour Street. This is a must see as a working museum with numerous tricycles, scottish replica wooden bicycle, many Penny Farthings and other old bicycles. Lots of photographs adorn the walls and they have these ideal little cards you can buy for about $8.00 with various cycling scenes of the by gone days upon them with a local flavour. The signage on the exterior of the clubrooms is a joy to behold in period signwriters serif fonts and distressed paint media.
You can sit astride the the static photographers working Penny Farthing Ordinary Bicycle with a Victorian backdrop to have your picture taken to send back home...an interesting collection of old brand chainwheels rest on the beams of the clubhouse that was the former Oamaru Testing Station.
A very well organised event by David Wilson and his club members who invited the local Safai Bros Raleigh Group to participate by creating classes for this type of urban commuter bike. Hats off to the local police, scrutineers and stewards and tireless supporters who gave up their weekend for this annual successful Heritage event.
