The Specialized Bicycle company was founded in 1974 by Mark Sinyard. Sinyard was a bicycling enthusiast who sold his Volks Wagon bus to fund a cycling trip across Europe. While he was there he collected some Italian and other hard to come by parts and brought them back to the states to work with. As time went on Sinyard and Specialized bikes started to manufacture their own bicycle components. Specialized bikes quickly became a strong success in the industry.

This brand was a cheaper made mountain bike that was available to more amateur riders at discount retailers and department stores. The Full Force brand angered some of the Specialized dealers and near the end of 1996 the company was very close to bankruptcy. The company is now doing quite well and is a major competitor for the good quality bike industry.

Apart from their involvement with circuit racing and competition, Specialized bikes also sponsors the Colorado State University and University of Georgia collegiate cycling teams.
