What bike have I got puzzle - any help please

Postby kingscotson on Sun Dec 13, 2009 10:42 pm

Hi everyone,

After endless internet trawling I've decided to join this forum as I can't figure out what bike I have - not sure why it bothers me so much but it does!! I don't seem to be able to find anything on Triumph bikes apart from the old 3 gears.

This is something I picked up for £10 and have now restored/bastardised. It's A Raleigh Triumph, made in Nottingham.
The frame appears to be alloy (definately not steel, 10 speed with Sachs Huret at the front and an Elan rear mech (I've never come across an Elan mech before).
The cranks were Raleigh as well the bottom bracket cable guide is also Raleigh.

I've attached a picture from pre and post bastardisation, note that the badge isn't original as the bike's badge was a sticker rather than a metal one.

Thanks in advance for your replies

Tom

This is how it looked when I bought it. I assume that all the parts were originals but can't confirm.

After I got my grasy hands on it. I hope it doesn't offend any purists - well actually, I don't mind if it does.

Your bike was built in the mid Eighties, assuming the position of the shifters, the seat style, and braking system are original. Raleigh used Triumph, BSA, Sun and other brand's badges on their less well specified bikes.
Raleigh didn't make an alloy frame until 1990 with the Dynatech series which had steel, aluminium or titanium tubes glued into aluminium lugs.
Dynatech bikes are expensive, rare and look very different to yours.
Your picture is small but I'd guess based on experience (I buy and sell bikes like yours for a living) you have a steel framed entry level sports bike.
I'm guessing your bike experience has been mostly with MTB's...

Top tip...If a magnet sticks to the frame, it's steel.

It's quite alright to chop it up and personalise it...It's not a rare bike...Nice job by the way!

Thanks for your reply,

Yes, I mostly have experience of MTB's - or in fact any useless hand-me-downs!
I haven't done the magnet test but assume that you're right.
This is honestly the lightest bike I've ever had, I better not try an expensive road bike or I'll just end up bursting my bubble as well as my bank account. For me at least this bike is superbly smooth - (please, no sniggering if any bike snob is reading this!)

I'd still like to know which model this is.
Have Triumph ever produced any mid-top end bikes or has it been a more of an affordable line of Raleigh?

Cheers,
Tom
